Thermal comfort and windproof
Wind considerably increases the effect of the cold! So, for an outside temperature of 0°C and 20 km h winds, it will feel like the temperature is -10°C. Windproof components help eliminate the discomfort linked to this freezing effect . They are very effective at reducing heat loss by creating a barrier against the wind.
Water-repellent component (different to being waterproof)
The water repellent property of a fabric is its ability to make water run off its surface without absorbing it. As a result, the fabric does not soak up water & stays light, breathable & warm. A fabric becomes water-repellent by applying a treatment to its outer surface. This treatment must be renewed throughout the garment s lifetime (recommended after every three washes).
Component breathability
To find out if a fabric is breathable, its evaporative resistance RET (test based on ISO 11092) is measured. The lower the fabric s resistance, the more water vapour generated by physical activity is able to evaporate, and the higher the fabric s breathability. For example: RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric 9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric 12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric RET > 20 = little or no breathability.
